Congress alleges EVM tampering in Haryana assembly polls, sends complaints to Election Commission

The Congress on Friday submitted more complaints to the Election Commission alleging malfunctioning of electronic voting machines during the counting of votes for the Haryana assembly elections. Congress candidates from 20 assembly constituencies have alleged in their written complaints to the Election Commission that the batteries of some EVMs were 99 per cent charged during the counting of votes on October 8. The complaints come after the Congress's crushing defeat in the Haryana assembly elections when the party failed to secure a simple majority even after 10 years of BJP rule in the state.

The Congress has said the assembly election results were "unexpected" and has alleged EVM tampering in some seats. “Following the issues raised and the representation submitted to the Election Commission of India on October 9, we have now submitted an updated memorandum highlighting serious and blatant irregularities in the election process in 20 Assembly constituencies of Haryana. We hope that the Election Commission will take note of it and issue appropriate directions,” AICC general secretary, communications, Jairam Ramesh said in a post on X. We request you to take immediate action on the attached complaints and ensure that all EVMs in these constituencies are sealed immediately. It is also requested that a detailed investigation be initiated on our complaints and completed in a time-bound manner,” the party’s memorandum sent to the EC said. Now in their written complaints sent to the EC, some of the Congress candidates have alleged that most of the EVMs were less than 80 per cent charged during the counting of votes, while some were 99 per cent charged.

On Wednesday, senior Congress leaders met EC officials and submitted seven complaints in writing. They said they will submit more such complaints from some of their other candidates in detail. In a memorandum to the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners, the Congress has said, "One of the issues faced by many of our candidates is related to the EVMs and their battery capacity." It said these EVMs were used for counting votes cast during the Haryana Assembly elections held on October 5. The party said it has drawn the attention of the Election Commission to at least seven assembly constituencies. "We have collected additional 13 complaints/issues raised in the assembly constituencies of Haryana and have enclosed all the 20 complaints," the memorandum said. These complaints have come from Congress candidates from Narnaul, Karnal, Dabwali, Rewari, Hodal (SC), Kalka, Panipat City, Indri, Badkhal, Faridabad NIT, Nalwa, Rania, Pataudi (SC), Palwal, Ballabhgarh, Barwala, Uchana Kalan, Gharaunda, Kosli and Badshahpur assembly constituencies. These include seats where the party candidates lost by narrow margins. Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee President Udaybhan is also among the complainants.
