In Haryana assembly elections, the number of candidates decreased in some places and increased in others

The board has been laid for Haryana assembly elections and the candidates in the fray have also intensified their campaigning. But the situation in the district is that the number of candidates contesting from some assembly constituencies is decreasing here, while the craze has increased in some places. If we compare the last 20 years i.e. four elections, then the number of candidates in Indri and Gharaunda has decreased compared to the previous elections. Whereas the number of candidates has increased in Nilokheri and Karnal.

The central government may have given reservation to increase the participation of women, but in four elections, the number of women candidates in Nilokheri is decreasing every time. Whereas no woman has contested the election from Gharaunda assembly constituency after 2009. Here, two women contested the election for the last time in 2005 and Rekha Rana won and became MLA.

If we look at the data, only the elections of 1996 and 2014 were such, where the maximum number of candidates contested on all the seats till date. At some places 25 people contested while at other places the figure crossed 35. From the formation of Haryana till the 2024 elections, 974 candidates contested for the Vidhan Sabha on all the six seats including the defunct Jundla seat. Out of these only 72 were successful. At the same time, in the elections held so far, only 53 women have contested.

So many candidates have contested elections so far

Before this, a woman contested for the first time in 1996. Whereas in the seven elections before this, no woman contested.

Asandh: In the 2014 elections, the maximum number of candidates contested was 28. This time, only half of it, i.e. 14, contested the elections. Both times, two women contested.
