"President Draupadi Murmu: Inner peace and social change possible through spirituality"
President Draupadi Murmu on Friday said spirituality can bring desired positive social change through bringing balance and inner peace and empowering genuine social issues. Speaking at the Global Summit on 'Spirituality for a Clean and Healthy Society' organised by Prajapita Brahmakumari Ishwariya Vishwa Vidyalaya, she said the importance of peace and unity has increased even more in today's world. "Only when we are calm can we feel empathy and love for others, the teachings of yoga and spiritual institutions like Brahmakumari make us experience inner peace. This peace can bring positive change not only within us but in the entire society," she said.
Elaborating further, the President said spirituality does not mean being religious or renouncing worldly activities. Spirituality means recognising the inner power and bringing purity in conduct and thoughts. Purity in thoughts and actions is the way to bring balance and peace in every sphere of life. It is also essential for building a healthy and clean society. He said it (spirituality) is not only a means of personal development but also a way to bring about positive change in society. "Only when we are able to recognise our inner purity, we will be able to contribute towards establishing a healthy and peaceful society," the President said.
Spirituality empowers many issues related to society and the earth such as sustainable development, environmental protection and social justice. "Thus, physical, mental and spiritual cleanliness is the key to a healthy life, so we should not focus only on external cleanliness but also remain mentally and spiritually clean," he said. Holistic health is based on a clean mindset. Emotional and mental health depends on right thinking as thoughts only take the form of words and behaviour. We should look within ourselves before forming opinions about others. By putting ourselves in someone else's position, we will be able to form the right opinion," the President said. "Materialism gives us momentary physical and mental satisfaction, which we consider as real happiness and get attached to it. This attachment becomes the cause of our dissatisfaction and misery. On the other hand, spirituality allows us to know ourselves, to recognise our inner nature."
