Ancient species of Vasuki indicus, which lived about 4.7 crore years ago, discovered in Gujarat
An ancient species of snake named Vasuki indicus, which lived about 4.7 crore years ago, has been discovered in Gujarat. In a research published in Scientific Reports, researchers have described the new specimen recovered from the Panandhro lignite mine in Kutch, Gujarat, which dates back to the Middle Eocene period. The species has been named Vasuki indicus after the mythological snake. The name Vasuki is derived from the king of snakes wrapped around the neck of Lord Shiva. The word indicus means of India. Scientists have indicated with this name that this snake was found only in India and was as powerful and huge as Lord Shiva's king of snakes. Researchers have described 27 well-preserved vertebrae. The length of the vertebrae is between 37.5 to 62.7 mm and the width is between 62.4 to 111.4 mm and the body is cylindrical. Researchers at IIT Roorkee claim that this now extinct cobra must have been one of the longest cobras in the world. Today's 6 meter (20 foot) anacondas and pythons were nothing in front of it. Researchers estimate that the length of Vasuki Indicus could be between 10.9 to 15.2 meters.
