In the capital Bhopal, the situation of "potholes in the roads or roads in the potholes" is so bad
The situation of potholes in the roads or roads in the potholes has worsened in the entire state. Looking at the situation in the capital Bhopal, one can easily understand the difficulties spread to small cities and towns. The figure of road accidents that has come out in the first 8 months of the year 2024 has increased by about 31 percent compared to previous years.
According to the data released by the capital traffic police, there has been a 31 percent increase in the death rate from road accidents in the first 8 months of 2024, which is more than the same period last year. According to the data of the traffic police, between January 1 and June 30, 2024, 167 people died in 1,502 road accidents, while 1,115 people were injured. In the same period in 2023, 1,513 road accidents resulted in 97 deaths and 1,144 injuries.
In the first half, the city police have issued a total of 25,738 challans to violators. 25,738 were for not wearing helmets, 362 for drunk driving, and 1,186 for overspeeding. Despite such strictness, traffic officials have noted a worrying rise in road accidents. Many accidents have been attributed to road engineering, which needs immediate improvement. Officials stressed that people should understand that the city roads are not conducive to overspeeding on their high-end bikes and SUVs, which have a maximum speed of 150-200 kmph.
According to traffic police data, the highest number of road accidents this year have been recorded in the Misrod area. The area witnessed 13 deaths in 76 road accidents in six months. This was followed by Koh-e-Fiza and Bairagarh, where 10 people died in road accidents during the same period. A total of 102 road accidents were reported in Koh-e-Fiza, while Bairagarh had 47 accidents. Eight people died in 59 road accidents in Khajuri area, seven died in 64 accidents in Kolar and seven died in 58 accidents in TT Nagar. Six people each died in Piplani, Ratibad and Chhola areas.
A senior traffic police officer said that after every road accident, police officials have to visit the accident site and record the cause of the road accident in the Integrated Road Accident Database (IRAD), which helps in analysing the causes of road accidents at a specific location. But in most cases, police officials do not understand road engineering defects such as any blind bend or road design defect and do not record them. They also miss many other reasons like stray cows sitting on the road or weather conditions and do not enter these in the database. Many policemen are not able to enter the correct data in the software due to lack of technical knowledge. Due to this problem, many factors causing road accidents remain unrevealed.
