Filmmaker Madhura Jasraj dies on Wednesday morning

Filmmaker Madhura Jasraj, widow of noted classical singer Pandit Jasraj and daughter of veteran film personality V. Shantaram, died at her home on Wednesday morning. She was 86 and was suffering from age-related health issues. She is survived by her children Sharangdev Pandit, daughter Durga Jasraj and four grandchildren, family publicist Pritam Sharma said. Madhura Jasraj's body has been kept at her home in Versova, the cremation process will begin around 3.30 pm and the last rites will be performed at the Oshiwara crematorium. Active as a writer, filmmaker, producer and choreographer, Madhura made the famous documentary, 'Sangeet Martand Pandit Jasraj' (2009) as a tribute to her husband. Madhura - whose brother is filmmaker Kiran Shamtaram - wrote a biography of her acclaimed father V. Shantaram and penned several other novels. She also contributed immensely to other fine arts. Durga Jasraj remembered her mother saying that her contribution, in her own right and in documenting and restoring the legacy of her father and husband, was enormous. In 2010, Madhura directed her first Marathi film, Aai Tujhe Ashirwad, which made history as the oldest debut director in a feature film, and found a place in the Limca Book of Records. The film featured songs of Pandit Jasraj and late Lata Mangeshkar in Marathi. Madhura met Pandit Jasraj and they married in 1962, first living in Kolkata for a year and then settling in Mumbai.
