Taking a dig at Lok Sabha opposition leader Rahul Gandhi over his recent statement on reservation, BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla said he has shown his "political and family DNA" on the issue. This comes amid a controversy over Rahul Gandhi's remarks. During his visit to the United States, the Lok Sabha leader said the Congress party will think of abolishing reservation only when India becomes a "fair place", which is not the case. Speaking to ANI, Poonawalla said, "Rahul Gandhi has shown his political and family DNA on reservation on foreign soil. He spoke about Ambedkar ji's abolition of reservation. His family did it. In 1961, Nehru ji had said that reservation is wrong. He had said that it makes people second class. Rajiv Gandhi and Indira Gandhi had opposed the Mandal Commission and its report. Rajiv Gandhi had said that those who are given reservation are fools." He said, "When the UPA came to power, the Congress party with a malafide intention hatched a conspiracy to abolish SC, ST and OBC reservation and give it to vote banks. They did it in Karnataka. It is happening in Bengal as well." Further attacking the Congress leader, Poonawalla said that by abolishing reservation, Valmiki, Gujar and Bakarwal communities in Jammu and Kashmir will also be deprived.

This means that the reservation given to Valmiki, Gujar, Bakarwal for the first time because of PM Modi will be taken away and distributed among vote banks. Rahul Gandhi should refute this and break ties with the National Conference," he added.

During his interaction with students and teachers at Georgetown University in Washington, DC, the Congress leader also reiterated the need to conduct a caste census and said that 90 per cent of the country's population - OBCs, Dalits and Adivasis - not being properly represented in the country is the "elephant in the room". "There is an elephant in the room. When we talk about capturing institutions, businesses and the media, the elephant in the room is that 90 per cent of India's people - OBCs, Dalits, Adivasis - are not even part of the game. That is the elephant in the room," Rahul Gandhi said. "The reality is that they are not getting participation. The problem is that 90 per cent of India is not able to play... We will think of abolishing reservation when India is a fair place and India is not a fair place. Now, this creates a problem. There are upper caste people who say 'what have we done wrong, why are we being penalised'," he added in his address.
