Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday went to inspect a major flyover under construction in Guwahati city at midnight. He visited the construction site of the Dighalipukhuri-Noonmati flyover along with senior officials of the Public Works Department (PWD), where construction work is underway. The Chief Minister took stock of the progress of the work. He interacted with the officials and gave them necessary instructions.
The state government has set a deadline of 2026 to complete the flyover. However, after the inspection, CM Sarma told reporters that a portion of the flyover will be opened by March next year. According to him, the flyover will decongest traffic in major areas of the city and the administration is giving great importance to its completion before the deadline. "It is already midnight. I have just inspected the ongoing work of the Dighalipukhuri-Noonmati flyover," CM Sarma wrote to X. "We will open the Noonmati-Chandmari section by March 2025 and the rest by early 2026. We will also connect this flyover to key areas like Rajgarh and Ulubari in the coming days," he said. Last year, the chief minister had also conducted a midnight survey of the state's longest flyover, built in Guwahati's Maligaon area, before opening it to the public.
The flyover at Maligaon was inaugurated on August 30 last year. It is an 833-metre-long railway flyover and is the first of its kind in the entire Northeast as it includes two overpasses as well as a sports complex underneath it. Built by a local contractor and dedicated to the Jorhat Badminton Association, the sports complex is a perfect example of how to use urban space as efficiently as possible. The complex has adequate lighting and seating arrangements, so that young athletes can develop their skills. To inspire young potential, portraits of famous athletes have been painted on the pillars and walls. This was the seventh road flyover in Guwahati.
