Mumbai International Airport set for first trial landing of aircraft
The proposed Navi Mumbai International Airport is all set to conduct the first trial landing of an aircraft on October 5, which is expected to be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Domestic operations at the airport are scheduled to begin in March 2025, followed by international operations in June 2025. Sanjay Shirsat, the newly appointed chairman of the City and Industrial Development Corporation, inspected the airport site on Tuesday. He was accompanied by CIDCO vice-chairman and managing director Vijay Singhal and officials of the Adani Group, which is building the airport through Navi Mumbai International Airport Ltd. CIDCO has a 25% stake in the project.
After assessing the progress, Shirsat addressed the media, saying, "The construction work of the airport is progressing at a satisfactory pace to meet our targets. On October 5, an Indian Air Force aircraft will land on the runway at the airport for a trial run. We are planning to conduct the trial in the presence of the PM." Chief Minister Eknath Shinde is personally inspecting it and all necessary arrangements are being made. "Once the test landing is done successfully, we will start the domestic airport from March 2025. From June we will start international flights from the airport," he said.
The long-running and costing over ₹16,700 crore NMIA project is finally set to start operations from the planned target of March 2025. Last month, the Airports Authority of India completed the Instrument Landing System (ILS) test, which calibrates the flight path to ensure the operational readiness of the airport. After the ILS test, a report was submitted to prepare the instrument approach procedure, following which NMIA will be given the licence after conducting further tests and obtaining the necessary permission to make the runway operational. Shirsat, stressing the importance of the project, said, "This is going to be a game changer project for Navi Mumbai." It will have 4 inter-connected terminals with parking facilities for 350 aircraft as well as metro, rail and road connectivity on all sides.
