Junior doctors stage dharna at Lal Bazar demanding resignation of Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goel over rape and murder case.

Hundreds of junior doctors, who had been staging a sit-in for nearly 24 hours near Lal Bazar demanding the resignation of Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goel over the alleged rape and murder incident in RG Car, ended their protest on Tuesday after a 22-member delegation of agitators met the city police chief. The doctors, however, said that the strike they have been on since August 10 demanding justice for the victim will continue. After the meeting that lasted for nearly one-and-a-half hours, protesting doctor Aniket Mahata told media persons, "Our delegation met Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goel. We handed over our memorandum to him demanding his resignation. We told him how the police have failed to deal with the RG Car case and he should take moral responsibility and step down.

They said that right now they have no intention of stepping down but will do so if the higher authorities want. However, they could not give any satisfactory answer to our questions and the issues we raised." On Monday, hundreds of junior doctors from various medical colleges took out a rally to Kolkata Police headquarters Lalbazar in the afternoon demanding Goel's resignation. When the police stopped the rally, the doctors started a sit-in near Lalbazar. Meanwhile, a video surfaced on social media in which TMC leader Kunal Ghosh can be seen meeting four junior doctors at an office. It was also reported that the deadlock ended after the meeting. "This is not true.

The protesting junior doctors have been adamant on their demands since yesterday. Those who can be seen meeting him (Ghosh) are not representatives of the West Bengal Junior Doctors Forum. We have not allowed any political leader to join our protest till date and we will not allow this to happen," the protesting doctor said. On Monday night, when Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP and former Calcutta High Court judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay visited the protest site, he faced 'go back' slogans. Meanwhile, a section of TMC leaders unleashed a barrage of hate speeches and abuses against the protesters and opposition leaders who are demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the RG Kar incident.

This comes after Banerjee, while addressing a rally of the TMC youth wing last week, said she leaves it to party leaders and workers to decide how to deal with opposition parties. TMC leader Aatish Sarkar from Ashoknagar in North 24 Parganas threatened that his party would make obscene posters of the mothers and sisters of those who abuse the TMC supremo. However, the party suspended him following a political controversy. BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla posted a video of TMC MLA Arundhati Maitra, popularly known as Lovely Maitra, in which the latter allegedly called protesting doctors butchers, citing the impact of their strike on poor patients. Earlier in a speech, she had asked party workers to take revenge on those pointing fingers at the TMC supremo. In another video, North Bengal Development Minister Udayan Guha can be seen telling party workers that if they bite you once, you have to bite them five times. Only then will this propaganda and attempts to disrupt the momentum stop. TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee had to intervene and ask party leaders to be more polite and more empathetic.
