Boat service in Varanasi temporarily suspended, boatmen having difficulty making ends meet
With boat services in Varanasi temporarily suspended even as water in the Ganga river receded following rains in the state, boatmen say they are having difficulty making ends meet. Due to the ban on boat operations for the past two-and-a-half months, boats are parked at the Dashashwamedh Ghat, resulting in the Majhi community facing a crisis over their livelihood. A local boatman said most boatmen are surviving on meagre means.
We are facing a lot of problems as boat services have been suspended here due to rising water levels. This is our only source of income. Now that we have no livelihood, we are surviving on little money and food. Looking at the situation of local boatmen, the government needs to resume the services. We will take all necessary precautions for passengers," he said. Continuous rains in the mountains and active monsoon rains in the plains have caused the water level in the Ganga river to rise, threatening several ghats in Kanpur city. The rising waters have inundated ghats such as Sarasaiya Ghat, Golaghat and Bhairav Ghat and
affected daily life. The incessant rains have led to a significant rise in the water level of the river, raising concerns among local authorities and residents. The situation is being closely monitored and officials are prepared to take necessary measures to mitigate potential flooding. The swollen river has already started encroaching on the ghats, hampering daily life and activities along the river. Residents and devotees who frequently visit these ghats have been advised to exercise caution and follow updates from local authorities. Due to the rising water in the Ganga river, the priests present there on the last day of Ganesh Visarjan advised people to exercise caution at the ghats. According to the priests, the number of devotees at the ghats has also decreased due to the rising water level of the river.
